4th Strategy
Advantageous Strategy
以逸待劳 (Conserving energy while the enemy tires himself out)
Explaination - You do not always need to do a direct attack / wiping out, you can always practice the art of "using the mild(weak) to control the strong". To delay and exhaust enemy, and give time to strengthen your own position.
Historical BG - Lu, was anxious, as they heard that Qi were on their way to attack them, because their last battle against Qi, was a total disaster. Because of that, they looked for a Hermit* of the name Cao Gui, to aid them in the time of panic.
When asked upon the King of Lu, of what Cao Gui is planning to do about the situation, Cao Gui suggested that he go to the front saying that in a war, situations are ever changing, he was then sent to the front, along with the army.
Upon seeing the Qi's first full fletch attack, King of Lu panicked and almost demanded a direct confrontation with the army of Qi, but Cao Gui called it off, and asked them to say in defensive position, During the second wave, they stayed in defensive position. But upon the third wave, when the Qi's army soldiers were less on guard, Cao Gui ordered a full force attack upon the army of Qi, like hungry lions they rushed out of the gates and attacked the surprised army of Qi.
Therefore claiming victory, when asked upon by the King on why he stayed defensive on the first two waves of attack, Cao Gui answered "In warfare spirit is the most important, during the first wave, the spirits of the opposing party is at it's highest, but subsequently deteoriates as it goes onto the second and third wave, as they have slackened because the army feels that they could not provoke us for an attack"
